Knicks Fans Divided Over Mikal Bridges’ $150 Million Extension Amid His Unselfish Move

A few months ago, Jalen Brunson set a notable precedent for selflessness when he accepted a staggering $100 million discount to help maintain the New York Knicks’ roster cohesion. This gesture has now indirectly benefited Mikal Bridges, who recently secured a new deal with the team. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics have had to drastically alter their lineup to avoid penalties under salary cap regulations, in stark contrast to their Eastern Conference rivals, the Knicks, who are managing to retain their key players.

According to a report by Shams Charania, “BREAKING: New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension with the franchise,” as confirmed by his agents, Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler of Excel Sports Management. This agreement includes a player option for the 2029-30 season as well as a trade kicker. During the playoffs, especially in games against the Celtics, the 28-year-old excelled, demonstrating his offensive prowess and making critical defensive plays. Following Brunson’s lead, Bridges also opted for a reduced salary, sacrificing $6 million compared to his maximum extension value of $156 million.

Charania noted, “Bridges takes a slight discount from his max extension number ($156M) in order to help the Knicks have flexibility to continue building the roster and add pieces to the East championship contender.” This maneuver not only reinforces Bridges’ commitment but also enhances the financial flexibility of the Knicks amid the complexities of the second apron salary cap rules.

The Knicks now have room to focus on filling their final roster slot, particularly looking at potential additions like Ben Simmons. As of earlier this week, New York has expressed considerable interest in signing Simmons, pending his decision. Although Simmons has not consistently met high expectations, his addition could complement the current lineup, bringing a veteran presence to bolster the bench.

On paper, Bridges’ decision seems strategically sound, earning him his contract extension. His teammate, Josh Hart, echoed this sentiment on X, exclaiming, “BAG MAN BAG MAN!” However, not all fans are as supportive, with some expecting greater contributions for his hefty salary.

Critics argue that a $6 million discount appears insignificant, especially considering the current salary trends; one fan remarked, “38m a year for a role player. My league is ruined.” The journey to acquire Bridges was not without significant cost to the Knicks, who traded five first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, a second-round pick, and Bojan Bogdanovic, raising eyebrows at the time for what many felt was an excessive price. Yet, following a deep playoff run, his trade acquisition now seems justified.

Still, fans continue to voice concerns over Bridges’ perceived value, labeling him as “overpaid” given his scoring averages. Had he chosen to wait until next summer as an unrestricted free agent, Bridges had the opportunity to sign a much more lucrative contract, potentially worth up to $229 million over four years or $296 million over five.

While his current contract stands at approximately $37 million per year, fans are adamant that a player making such a significant salary must provide more impactful performances. One user remarked, “150 million just to be mid, damn I wish I was 6’7.” Throughout his tenure in New York, Bridges has not yet reached his scoring potential, averaging over 26 points a game after his mid-season trade from the Suns but failing to break the 20 points-per-game barrier throughout his career.

Furthermore, concerns linger about his durability, as fans have noted, “150m for a guy who can’t stay on the court lmfao. Good luck New York y’all need it.” However, with the offensive talents of Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby supporting him, it’s crucial for fans to understand the expected drop in Bridges’ numbers.

With new coach Mike Brown at the helm, there’s hope that Bridges will see an uplift in both playing time and contributions moving forward, though speculation remains about his future with the franchise. One fan commented, “They going trade him in 7 months.” The business of the NBA can be ruthless, meaning any outcome is plausible. For now, the Knicks remain focused on their title ambitions as they continue to refine their roster.Sports
